How to Find Clients for Your Professional Services Online

Referrals still bring many professionals their first clients. But a referral usually ends with the client searching for you online, and what they find decides whether they call. If your page says "business solutions" or "professional services" and nothing else, they will move on to someone who is clearer.

The short answer: give clients one clear page that explains what you do, who it is for, what it costs, and how to contact you. Use Google, WhatsApp and social media to send people to that page. A KobStore storefront can be that page, and you can start it free.

Start with your client's first four questions

Before a client contacts you, they want to know:

  1. Does this service solve my problem?

  • Is this person qualified to do it?

  • What happens after I get in touch?

  • How are fees set?

  • Put the answers near the top of your page, in plain language. A plumber, accountant, tutor, designer or consultant should be able to read the first screen and know whether to continue.

Describe the work in ordinary words

Start with the customer's task, not your job title. Instead of "financial services", write "monthly bookkeeping and tax filing for small shops". Then add:

    • Who it is for: the kinds of clients, locations or project stages you serve.

  • What they get: deliverables, such as a written report, three design concepts, or four lessons a month.

  • What you need from them: documents, site photos, access, or decisions, and by when.

  • What you don't do: work outside your expertise, areas you don't cover, and when you would refer them elsewhere.

  • Say only what you are qualified and authorised to provide. If your profession is regulated, check your professional body's rules on advertising.

Build trust with proof you can stand behind

Use a real name and photo or logo, a short bio, your location or service area, and working hours. List qualifications, licences and memberships accurately, and keep them current. A certificate of attendance is not a professional licence, so don't present it as one.

Show work examples only with the client's permission, and explain your role in the project. Use testimonials that are genuine and approved. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. A few honest examples beat a long list of superlatives.

    Explain pricing without surprises

Professionals price in different ways: fixed packages, hourly rates, retainers or quotes. Pick the one that matches how the work is scoped, then show the logic:

    • If you publish a starting price, make it a real amount for a defined scope.

  • List what changes the price: size, urgency, travel, complexity, number of deliverables.

  • Say whether taxes, materials or third-party costs are extra.

  • If your first consultation is paid, say so, and say whether it is credited to later work.

  • Before you start, confirm scope, price, payment schedule, revision limits and cancellation terms in writing.

    Choose where to be found

No single channel does everything, so give each a clear job:

Why a KobStore page works as your hub

KobStore gives you a public page where you can list each service with its scope, working area, price basis and contact details, plus photos and policies. You then share that single link from your Google profile, WhatsApp, social bios, email signature and printed materials, so a referral who finds an old post still lands on current information.

    • Free to start. The Foundation tier has 10 listings with 2 images each. Free listings expire after 30 days unless renewed.

  • One-time upgrades. Catalyst is KSh 500 (60 listings, no expiry, Verified badge). Dominion is KSh 1,000 and Legacy is KSh 2,000, with more listings and extra marketing.

  • KobStore does not charge a percentage commission on seller sales or service fees. Payment arrangements depend on the listing type; check current pricing for applicable plan and add-on charges.

  • Services supported. Pages are built for services as well as products. See advertise services online in Kenya.

  • A KobStore page helps present your offer and contact details. Sellers respond to enquiries and arrange payment, delivery, or appointments directly with customers. Check the pricing page for current terms.

    What your page should cover

    • What problem or task the service addresses

  • Who it suits, and what is outside scope

  • Deliverables or packages

  • Where and how the work is delivered (in person, remote, at your premises)

  • What affects price and timing

  • Qualifications and permitted examples

  • What the client should send first

  • The next step, and how soon they will hear back

  • Test it on your phone like a first-time client. Make the call or WhatsApp button obvious, and check every link works.

Qualify enquiries without asking too much

Your first message form should ask only enough to judge fit: the service needed, a general location, preferred timing, and a short description. For legal, financial, health or other sensitive work, do not ask for ID documents, account details or confidential files through a public form. Move that to a secure channel later.

Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 applies when you handle clients' personal data, and registration with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner may be required depending on your size and sector. Check odpc.go.ke or ask a lawyer about your situation. Store enquiries securely, and don't add people to marketing lists without permission.

Reply promptly, and say what happens next. Do not call something confirmed until it is.

Deliver well, because delivery builds your reputation

    • Record the agreed scope, milestones, dependencies, fee and communication schedule.

  • Confirm any scope change in writing before extra work.

  • Agree rescheduling and cancellation rules for appointments.

  • Protect client information, and never publish client documents or identifiable details without permission.

  • Afterwards, ask for feedback and permission before using a testimonial.

  • Measure the right things

For each enquiry, record where it came from, whether it fit your criteria, how long you spent qualifying it, whether the proposal was accepted, and whether you completed the work. Messages and followers are not the goal. Suitable, profitable work you can deliver is.

Test one channel for four to eight weeks with a clear page and a fixed response standard. If visitors don't enquire, check your proof, scope, price basis and contact button. If enquiries don't become projects, review how you qualify, follow up and write proposals.

    Try this four-week plan

    1. Week 1: write your service descriptions and pricing logic, and publish them on a free KobStore page with real photos.

  • Week 2: add the link to your Google profile, WhatsApp, social bios and email signature.

  • Week 3: post useful answers to real client questions, ending with your link.

  • Week 4: review your enquiry record, fix the page where people drop off, and decide whether to upgrade or promote.
